FARMINGDALE - Resumption of the third round of the rain-marred 109th U.S. Open was pushed back 4.5 hours Sunday because of heavy showers that have left Bethpage Black unplayable.

A similar storm drenched the course Thursday and allowed for barely three hours of play, pushing the tournament off schedule to the point where a Monday finish of 72 holes is now assured for only the second time in U.S. Open history. Players managed to complete the second round Saturday and some even finished as many as six holes in round three before heavy rains forced a suspension for the day.

Ricky Barnes, the American who holds the lead after two rounds with a 36-hole U.S. Open record eight-under par 132, was among 16 players unable to begin their third rounds.

Defending champion Tiger Woods and fan favorite Phil Mickelson each parred their first hole in round three before play was halted.
