ADANA - Until now, Adana, notorious for its high temperatures, has never been the first city to come to mind as far as water sports go, but that may be changing with the introduction of kayaking at Seyhan Dam Lake next year
With its extremely hot and humid weather and its distance from the sea, Adana has hardly been a center for water sports, but this will soon change with a racetrack being built on Seyhan Dam Lake.
Once construction is completed, the lake will be available for canoeing and kayaking races. The racetrack will play an important part in city’s bid to become an important center for water sports.
The southern city of Adana is counting down to the opening of the racetrack that is 2,000 meters long and 90 meters wide. If everything goes as planned, the city will be able to host international water sport events.
The track’s setting on the lake may seem overdue, as the dam lake has provided suitable conditions to host water sports for more than half a century. Built in 1956, with a length of 28 kilometers and a maximum width of 17 kilometers, Seyhan Dam Lake has always had potential.
The Head of the Youth and Sports Directorate in Adana, Bayram Hadi, said the city would start to fulfill that potential next year. "With its warm weather, the city has always been ready to host water sport events," said Hadi. "Now we will be able to fulfill that potential." Starting from Çukurova University’s Balcalı Campus and running to Sevgi Island, the track will draw hundreds of athletes to the area and boost the city’s ranking as a sporting destination in the country, if not the whole continent.
"You cannot find many places suitable for sport," said Hadi. "Some parts of the dam lake are good for sailing, while others are great for canoeing and kayaking. It will be one of its kind in Turkey."
Hadi said the track will be eligible for international races and that will be important for the local sports scene. "It will strengthen our bid to become the most important destination for water sports," he stated. "We are also working to help develop sport in the area and increase the number of athletes in every field."
A month needed
Hadi said the budget was ready and the track would be completed in a month, after which the promotional campaign would start.
"We conducted detailed research on Adana’s weather conditions, such as average temperature, humidity, rainfall and wind. Then we included the conditions of hotels and historical assets in the city and photographs of the dam lake in the campaign file."
The promotional file will be sent to the Turkish Rowing Federation who will be asked to make official bids to host national and international water sport events in Adana.
Hadi said the racetrack would give a huge boost to the popularity of Seyhan Dam Lake that is already a tourist attraction. "Even in its current condition, foreign athletes are fascinated by the beauty of the lake. After the building of the racetrack, international events will be huge asset in promoting the city and will help us attract more tourists," said Hadi.
