A moderate earthquake with a magnitude of 5.1 shook eastern Turkey on Wednesday, causing damage to buildings in the southeastern province of Adiyaman, the state-run Anatolian Agency reported.
It said the quake occurred at 5:22 a.m. (0222 GMT) with its epicenter in the district of Samsat, in Adiyaman province. There are no reports of any injuries but the local governor said the quake caused damage to several buildings, the report added.
Residents ran out of their homes and stayed in the streets after the quake, Anatolian Agency said adding that the effects of the earthquake were felt in neighboring provinces.
Turkey is prone to earthquakes and sits on major fault lines, one of which runs near the country's largest city Istanbul. Northwest Turkey was hit by a major earthquake in 1999, which killed 18,000 people.Â
