President Abdullah Gul arrived yesterday in the Pakistani capital Islamabad as the official guest of President Pervez Musherref, who has only recently separated his title from the Pakistani military's General Staff headquarters, as is now in office under oath as the State President of Pakistan. Gul arrived yesterday at the Islamabad Chaklala Military Airport with his wife, Hayrunnisa Gul.
The two were met by Pakistani President Musherref and his wife, Sehba Musherref, and an official welcoming ceremony including a 21 gun salute for the Gul couple proceeded.
Gul's visit to Pakistan coincides with 60th anniversary celebrations for the nation. The Pakistani press, devoting wide coverage to Gul's visit, noted yesterday: "One of these men wanted to be a military president, the other was prevented for a time from being president by a military process." Gul is the first foreign leader to visit Pakistan since Musherref cut his official links with the Pakistani military offices.
Following an official dinner hosted in honor of Gul yesterday evening, today's schedule for Abdullah Gul includes a laying of a wreath on the Pakistani national monument, and two separate meetings with opposition leaders Benezir Bhutto and Namaz Sherif. It is expected that Gul will call on Pakistani authorities and administration leaders to try and turn the nation towards a clearer path to democracy.
