ISTANBUL - Turkish singer Hadise made it to the finals of the Eurovision Song Contest with her performance Tuesday evening. The pop singer’s "Düm Tek Tek," Turkey’s official entry in the campy contest, features oriental rhythms and was accompanied by belly dancing.

The song is seen as one of the favorites in the annual music extravaganza, which is being hosted by Russia this year. Turkey led the list of the first 10 countries chosen as finalists in the Eurovision Song Contest 2009 after voting ended in the first semifinal early Wednesday morning.

The 10 entries to qualify based on voting by television viewers and juries across Europe were from Turkey, Sweden, Israel, Portugal, Malta, Finland, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Romania, Armenia and Iceland. Television pictures showed that Hadise and her team cheered and waved red-and-white Turkish flags after her qualifying for the finals was announced.

The singer, who had experienced some health problems prior to last week, told the news agencies that she was worried because she could not get out of bed for three days. Saying she feels fine now, Hadise said, "It is a miracle that I am well now; the treatment will continue in Belgium," where she was born.

Plans for a vacation

After the Eurovision Song Contest concludes, Hadise said she would go on vacation. The pop star wore an evil-eye bead on her red performance outfit, which was criticized by many Turkish fashion designers.

They dubbed the Gizia-brand two-piece costume "the future belly dancer" for what they saw as its resemblance to a degenerated version of a traditional Turkish belly-dance outfit. The singer’s manager, Süheyl Atay, said Hadise did not select the costume.

"The costume was prepared by Gizia from a design by Mahmut Karadağ, who lives in Belgium," he said. With Russia, France, Germany, Britain and Spain automatically given the right to compete in Saturday's final in Moscow, 15 of the 25 finalist spots are now filled. The remaining 10 finalists will be chosen tomorrow. The countries eliminated in the first semifinal were Andorra, Belarus, Belgium, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Macedonia, Montenegro and Switzerland.
