Polygamists risk hurting their income

DÄ°YARBAKIR- Men in YeniÅŸehir who decide to have an extra wife face losing control over their wages.Despite the fact that polygamy is legally banned, some married men undertake a religious marriage ceremony with another woman, in practice becoming polygamists.
According to a collective bargaining agreement singed between Diyarbakır’s Yenişehir Municipality and its workers, the wages of the men who have an extra wife will be given to their official first wife. The first wife will only receive the wages if she lodges a complaint. The same practice will be used for men who physically abuse their wives or children.
Another article in the agreement stipulates that money owed to a departing male worker will be given to the man only with his wife’s consent.Â
The agreement, which also includes a 14 percent pay rise for the 2009-2010 period, was signed by Yenişehir Mayor Selim Kurbanoğlu from the pro-Kurdish Democratic Society Party, or DTP, and the provincial head of the municipal workers’ union Vezir Perişan on Tuesday.
PeriÅŸan said the regulations in the agreement should not be viewed as an insult to men. "These rules are aimed to protect the spouses and children of our workers. None of the workers objected to the new rules."
The Küçükdilli Municipality in the southern province of Adana signed a similar agreement, whereby half of the wages of those workers who mistreat their wives or children are given to the wife. Lawyer Hüma Ozan, when consulted about the rules, said it was impossible to implement such rules because they did not conform to law. "Even when a court orders the seizure of an individual’s wages, only a quarter of it can be seized."
