ANTALYA - Turkish poet Kemal Özer has won the 13th Golden Orange Poetry Award.
Held by the Antalya Culture Art Foundation, or AKSAV, with contributions by the Antalya Metropolitan Municipality, the award went to "Temmuz İçin Yaralı Semah," a poetry book by Özer published by Yordam Publications.
Among the selection committee were Doğan Hızlan, Enver Ercan, Şeref Bilsel, Yücel Kayıran and Cevat Çapan, winner of last year’s award for his book of poems, "Bana Düşlerini Anlat." For this reason, the 13th Golden Orange Poetry Award symposium focused on the poetry of Çapan with contributions by many academics and critics, including Michael Hulse from the faculty of English language and literature at Warwick University, and poet İlyas Tunç.
Özer was also awarded with the 4th Golden Page Literature Award in November 2008 by the World Book Magazine for the same book of poems.
Held since 1997 and regarded as one of the most important art events among literary circles, the Golden Orange Poetry Award is also of great importance as views and contributions presented at the symposium, attended by highly reputed critics and poets, are published into a book and offered to the literary world.
At the award ceremony that Kemal Özer could not attend due to health problems, his award was accepted by Doğan Hızlan from Cevat Çapan.
Born in Istanbul in 1935, Kemal Özer attended the faculty of Turkish language and literature at Istanbul University. Publishing the magazine "a" with his friends during his undergraduate years, Özer also worked at the daily newspaper Cumhuriyet and at Karacan Publications.
Among the founders and writers of "Yeni a" magazine, he has been publishing books since 1989with Yordam Publications that he established.
Among his poems are "Gül Yordamı," 1959, "Ölü Bir Yaz," 1960, "Tutsak Kan," 1963, "Kavganın Yüreği," 1973, "Araya Giren Görüntüler," 1983, "İnsan Yüzünün Tarihinden Bir Cümle," 1990, "Oğulları Öldürülen Analar," 1995 and "Onların Sesleriyle Bir Kez Daha," 1999.
