Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan has responded sharply to criticisms of the Turkish government issued earlier in the week by outspoken Diyarbakir Mayor Osman Baydemir.

Speaking yesterday in Ankara to his ruling AKP parliamentary group, PM Erdogan asserted that Mayor Baydemir should "create jobs rather than making comments."

In the meantime, the State Prosecutor in Diyarbakir, which is itself a largely Kurdish city in the Southeast of Turkey, has reportedly not yet decided whether or not to open an investigation into Baydemir's statements. The comments that sparked the response from Ankara were made two days ago by Baydemir, who said at the time:

"If the Prime Minister and other government ministers want to openly declare war against Diyarbakir, I say 'let's see them do so.' We won't try to escape a fight. Diyarbakir is a castle, and it will not fall."
