At a press conference held yesterday at the ruling AKP's headquarters in Ankara, PM Erdogan responded to a number of questions and debates that have arisen in the wake of both the July 22 general elections, and the even more recent preparations on the new Constitution framework.
Said Erdogan yesterday:
"These debates, which have arisen quite early, seem to be trying to drown the preparations on the Constitution before they were even born. I see that there are those who are trying to reduce the debates on the Constitution down to just one subject. This is very ugly."
He went on: "The unchangeable aspects to our Constitution are quite clear. There will be absolutely no work done on these. I do not want Turkey to lose any more energy, time, or younger generations on unnecessary fantasies or suspicions. We have to trust eachother. We need to try and understand eachother. We are in the position of needing to prove our shared values all around."
PM Erdogan also lashed out at the Turkish university rectors, under the umbrella of the Board of Higher Education (YOK), who met yesterday to condemn the current Constitution preparations. Said PM Erdogan, "They have no such authority. Let the rectors first take care of their own business, they don't have the right. They are contradictory within their own ranks.....There is no place for that sort of stance in democracy.....If the duty to create the Constitution lies with the rectors, then there is no meaning to the existance of the Turkish Parliament. Please excuse me, but everyone needs to know their own place.....They may not like our party, but we are not putting together one party's Constitution, we are making a Constitution for all of Turkey."
