A court case opened by Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan against the "Leman" humor magazine after the magazine ran a cover of Erdogan portrayed as a tick was rejected yesterday by the courts.
Erdogan had taken caricaturist Mehmet Cagcag to court for 25 thousand YTL for the drawing, which came out in June 2006. In the case, Erdogan's lawyer noted that the caricature portrayed the Prime Minister as a "deadly animal"; the defense noted that the caricature fell within the framework of media freedom of expression. Judge Kenan Altinparmak ruled in favor of the defense yesterday.
