ISTANBUL - Safety councilmen working at the scene of the Turkish Airlines, or THY, crash site in Amsterdam a few months ago were looking for the black box instead of helping victims, according to Police Chief Ben van Mierlo, private channel NTV reported yesterday.

The rescue work was catastrophic, said Mierlo, who was in charge of the rescue team, in "VMHP," a monthly magazine published by a senior staff police officers’ union. Mierlo implicitly criticized the chief investigator and the chairman of the Holland National Safety Council Pieter van Vollenhoven.

He said he arrived at the crash scene at the same time as officials from the Holland National Safety Council, and saw that the council officials were looking for the black box instead of rescuing the wounded people and identifying the deaths. He also implicitly said if the wounded victims were rescued in time, then the number of deaths may have been lower. When the THY plane crash landed en route from Istanbul, nine people, including three pilots, were killed and over 90 were injured.
