BODRUM - Pet lovers are angry about the killing of dogs and cats in Bodrum, while the municipality refuses to be held responsible for the occurances.

Six pet cats and 12 pet dogs were killed by poisoned meat in the popular holiday resort Göltürkbükü in Bodrum last weekend, much to the grief of their owners and animal protection associations.

"The number of poisoned animals can go higher," said Bahar Kopal, board member of Bodrum Animal Rights Association. "Eighty dogs and 30 cats were killed by poisoning this year alone. The municipality never took measures to prevent poisonings and never found out who was responsible." But Göltürkbükü Mayor Halil İbrahim Kaynar said that the municipality was "not responsible for that situation."

Güneş Çakıroğlu, who saw his third dog poisoned this year, was saddened to bury his dog named Gold. "We say Göltürkbükü is a popular tourism spot," he said. "But we see that civilization is nowhere to be found here yet."
