Petition of Intellectuals Again at the Kiosk

The Petition of Intellectuals, which was issued under the leadership of satirist Aziz Nesin in 1984, will be conveyed to President Ahmet Necdet Sezer on Monday by intellectuals, who are claiming that no significant progress was achieved in 19 years for the removal of the crime of thought and for the prevention of violation of human rights.A group of intellectuals, authors, artists, journalists and non-governmental organizations will hold contacts at the Cankaya Kiosk, Constitutional Court and Parliament, under the leadership of Aziz Nesin (the son of Aziz Nesin carrying the same name) and author Fikret Baskaya. Those intellectuals who had signed the petition and forwarded it to the Presidency and Parliament in 1984 were declared as “treacherous” by Kenan Evren, the President of the period and the leader of the 1980 coup, and were subjected to a legal action.�
