BODRUM - The ongoing problem of dogs and cats being poisoned by unknown persons with poisoned food left on the streets in various towns of Bodrum has now spread to Bitez.
In one month, 20 dogs and cats have been intentionally poisoned with chemically-laced food left on the streets to the outrage of many resident pet owners.
Bodrum Animal Rights Association Chairwomen Füsun Uslu said: "The number of dogs and cats poisoned is increasing. The authorities should take action to stop this."
Hasan Efe, 60, who found the dead bodies of four cats and two dogs on the street, said the recent killings of dogs and cats were not reflective of the modern face of Bitez, a popular tourist destination. "I found four cats and five dogs lying on the street. The cats and two of the dogs were dead. We we took the other three dogs to the vet. These three dogs were saved. The people massacring these animals are harming both nature and tourism."
Stating that they had appealed to the local prosecutor and the gendarmerie in Bodrum, Uslu said the number of dogs and cats killed with chemically-laced food had surpassed 20. "The tourism season is approaching and the number of killed animals is increasing."
İzmir officials monitor city's street dogs
Meanwhile the Aegean region stages another project sensitive on stray dogs’ help.
According to a project started by the İzmir Metropolitan Municipality Veterinary Administration is keeping 624 street dogs under surveillance using chips that were placed under the dogs’ skin in 2007.
The chips contain information about any diseases the dog has had and any vaccines it has been given.
Gökhan Özdemir, manager of the veterinary administration, said the number of street dogs and cats totals almost 10 percent of human population in the Western city of İzmir, where 3.5 million people live.
Özdemir said they have sterilized 9,800 dogs and cats so far, adding that the project will continue.
