KOCAELİ - A court sentenced a man to life imprisonment Thursday for the rape and murder of an Italian artist in northwestern Turkey last year.
Murat Karataş, 39, was sentenced to life imprisonment with hard labor by the first branch of Kocaeli’s Court for Serious Crimes for the rape and murder of Giuseppina Pasqualina Di Marineo, also known as Pippa Bacca.
Bacca, 33, was an Italian artist who was found raped and murdered April 12, 2008, near Tavşanlı village in the Gebze region, a few hours east of Istanbul. Her murder created an uproar in Turkey. Bacca had embarked on a hitchhiking trip with her friend Silvia Moro, leaving March 8 from Milan, and was headed to Israel as part of the pair's "Brides on Tour" project, a plea for peace in conflict areas.
Bacca arrived in Turkey on March 19, 2008, after hitchhiking through Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia and Hungary while wearing a wedding dress of her own design. The two artists separated in Istanbul and planned to meet up again in Tel Aviv.
