ANKARA - Sons and brothers of those who die in the course of military duty will be exempt from military service, Parliament decided late Thursday.
In relation to brothers of those killed in the line of duty, the amendment to the Military Service Law provides that if the deceased was on duty for a reason other than to fight terrorism, one of his brothers can benefit from the military service exemption.
Sons of those killed while in the military will also benefit from exemptions. If a son is undertaking military service when the amendment to the law comes into affect, they will also be able to be excused from military service.
The amendments, however, do not set out obligations, so if a son of a person killed in the line of duty wishes to undertake military service, he will be able to do so.
The recruiting process of those stripped of their Turkish citizenship but later repatriated, will also be amended and the process will relate to the person’s situation at the time when he lost his citizenship. The amendment will also change the communication method for recruitment processes. The written notification procedure will not be applied anymore and notifications will be done through state-owned Turkish Radio and Television Corporation. Young people of military age, which is 20, will be subjected to two roll calls per year. A provision to limit the production and use of maps that are not in line with the country’s interests was also affixed to the law. Permission from the General Command of Mapping will be required to publish all kinds of documents that include maps, atlases and images of Earth.
