ISTANBUL - Turkey’s organic market has great growth potential to bring capital into the country during the economic crisis, according to Atilla Artem, director of the Turkish Ecological Agriculture Organization.

Speaking at the opening of the 8th Organic Products Trade Fair in Istanbul yesterday, Artem said the richness of Turkey’s biological territory and the advantages brought by its geographic location had allowed Turkey’s organic market to grow extensively over recent years.

"More and more health problems are being caused by bad diets and the consumption of additives, and therefore, the demand for organic products is ever increasing," said Artem.

The trade fair is being held in Istanbul’s World Trade Center between Jan. 15 to 18. The fair is comprised of over 50 companies selling organic food, textile, cosmetics, cleaning materials, eco-decoration, packaging and eco-tourism. One of the leading organic companies in Turkey is EKOSAM whose products are produced in Turkey’s black sea region of Samsun. Promoting EKOSAM goods at the fair yesterday, was Samsun Mayor Hasan Basri Güzeloğlu, who said Samsun’s high rainfall together with its vast, rich soil resulted in a high quality of organic produce distributed to supermarkets throughout Turkey by EKOSAM. Güzeloğlu said in Samsun less chemicals and fertilizers were used than in other regions and easy access to the sea and airports resulted in products being instantly distributed across Turkey.

In addition to its organic food products, EKOSAM is also one of the leading organic brands in plant protection, nutrition, garden equipment, wrapping and packaging products. Aside from the various organic products at the fair, ecological and environmental charities, such as Greenpeace have also set up stalls to raise awareness. In the next few days, seminars and open floor discussions will be held at the fair to share ideas about future development of Turkey’s organic market.
