Opposition protests for fifth day in Georgia

TBILISI - Georgia's opposition vowed yesterday to boost pressure on President Mikhail Saakashvili with round-the-clock protests outside his office as up to 20,000 rallied for a fifth day.
"Unfortunately our large-scale protests have not been enough for the president to resign," Kakha Kukava, a leader of the opposition Conservative Party, told the crowd outside parliament. "So we have taken a decision to move toward the presidency where a protest will continue on a round-the-clock basis."Â
The new, permanent protest outside Saakashvili's offices was expected to begin at 13:00 GMT as Hürriyet Daily News & Economic Review went to press yesterday. The daily rallies outside parliament would also continue, Kukava said. Thousands of opposition supporters have been protesting Saakashvili since Thursday. The number of protesters dropped from some 60,000 on Thursday to fewer than 4,000 over the weekend, but rose again yesterday as the opposition vowed a new wave of rallies.
