ISTANBUL – One Turkish soldier was killed in a clash with PKK terrorists in Yuksekova town in the southeastern border province of Hakkari. (UPDATED)

One soldier was killed when a group of PKK terrorists opened fired on gendarmerie officers conducting a search operation in the area, DHA reported on Sunday. One terrorist was also reportedly killed in the clash.

The group of PKK terrorists involved in the clash fled back into northern Iraq, as military operations in the area continue.

The clash comes after the PKK announced in early June it would halt its armed attacks against Turkish targets until July 15. In April, the terror organization PKK announced it would suspend armed attacks until June 1; however, dozens of Turkish security forces have been killed in attacks carried out by the organization within this period.

The PKK, which launches cross-border attacks on Turkey from bases in northern Iraq, is listed as a terrorist group by Turkey and much of the international community, including the EU and the United States.
