The Istanbul-based Kandilli Observatory said the epicenter was the town of Simav, in the Kutahya province. The quake struck at 7:28 a.m. (0528 GMT) Tuesday.

A hospitalized 37-year-old woman died after experiencing heart trouble during the quake, the news agency said. Three other people were injured in the incident, it added. Â

The quake caused cracks in some buildings and broke windows, Simav Mayor Riza Ozdemir was quoted by news agencies as saying. Â

Residents of Simav rushed out of their homes in panic and are staying in the streets; they are scared to go back inside, he said.

Schools were closed for the day.

Earthquakes are frequent in Turkey, much of which lies atop the active North Anatolian fault.Â

Two powerful quakes in the heavily populated, industrialized northwest that measured 7.4 and 7.2 respectively claimed about 20,000 lives in August and November 1999.

EARTHQUAKE IN GREECE

A 5.4-magnitude earthquake also rattled western Greece earlier on Monday but caused no serious damage or injuries.

Athens Geodynamic Institute says the undersea earthquake occurred at 11:16 p.m. (2116 GMT) Monday, south of the Ionian Sea island of Zakynthos.

Greece is one of the world’s most seismically active countries, but its earthquakes rarely cause major damage or injuries.
