“There is an impression that Turkish Cypriot President Rauf Denktas is quite relaxed in these days because the voices of those who want him to accept the Annan Plan and who want Turkish Cypriots living in the Northern Cyprus to finally enter under the umbrella of the Greek Cypriot administration, are not being heard nowadays.“Denktas made a maneuver by liberating the passages in the island, which astonished those who have been saying that, “The border (wall) between the South and North will be brought down by Turks in the North.” On the contrary, Greek Cypriots were accumulated in the borders. But nobody can expect a “wolf politician” like Denktas to declare a victory with this scene. “A letter which was published in Cumhuriyet yesterday showed that Denktas was not living in peace. Denktas conveyed his worries to Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan in a letter (which he wrote on April 14, before the liberation of passages), saying that the participation of Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul to the signature ceremony of EU candidates that would be held on April 16 meant giving up from the basic thesis, which we have been defending for a long while.“The non-attendance of Gul in the ceremony and the attendance of the Turkish Ambassador in Athens instead, did not change the situation, because the ambassador, as a candidate country, placed his signature on the EU membership of the Greek Cypriot administration. This is a concrete diplomatic defeat…“Denktas has been saying that if we kept on going with this manner, we would have to accept the thesis that, “Turks in the island are a minority.” From now on, either the government will give up saying that, “We should first accept the Annan Plan and evaluate the other things afterwards” and continue to fight for our thesis or we will have to accept that the society in Cyprus will have no more connection with Turkey and will rather link its interests to the graciousness of the Greek Cypriot section. In such a case, we will forever forget about the Cyprus issue… Like Crete…”
