"We tried to arrange a meeting with him during his visit to Turkey," said Abdülkerim Kulaz from the village of Çavuştepe, in the Gürpınar municipality of Van province.

"The White House told us via the Adana consulate that a meeting would not be possible, but said Obama sends his greetings." Kulaz said the village had wanted to give Obama a world-renown Van cat but were told by the U.S. consulate that this would not be possible. "We named it ’Maviş,’" which is Turkish for bluey, Kulaz said. "The cat is well-cared for and if he tells us he wants it we will send it to him."
