ISTANBUL - Istanbul consumers submitted a total of 5,289 complaints in 2008 to the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Consumer Rights Police Headquarters.
The research of the consumer complaint bureau for 2008 has been released on the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality's Web site. Considering the number of people consuming goods each day and the size of the population, it is apparent that not too many people in Istanbul sound off.
When looking at the complaints, the highest number received by the bureau, totaling 1,669, concerned faulty goods and service. Door-to-door selling ranked second with 925 complaints.
Informing about legal rights
The Consumer Rights Police Headquarters succeeded in mediating between consumers and suppliers in 3,526 cases of the 5,289. In the cases where a compromise could not be reached, officials informed consumers about their legal rights.
Most consumers who demanded their rights were high school graduates. Of the total number of complainants, 1,714 had graduated from primary school and 1,637 were university graduates. Of consumers who had complained, 2,053 were aged between 20 and 35 years of age, 1,806 were between 35 to 50 and 1,430 were between 50 to 65.
