OSLO - Oil-rich Norway said on Saturday it was ready to offer up to 30 billion crowns ($4.56 billion) to support the International Monetary Fund, or IMF, and called for the fund to play a bigger role in supervising financial markets.

"The profound international crisis calls for an IMF with adequate lending capacity. It is natural for Norway, which has considerable international reserves, to contribute to this end," Finance Minister Kristin Halvorsen said in a statement.
