Northern Iraqi Kurds vote for single government in region

The local Kurdish parliament in the northern Iraqi city of Erbil has voted to go ahead with the formation of a single government for the region. The vote, which put an end to the dual-government system in the autonomous region, also brought in Necirvan Barzani, the director of Mesut Barzani's Iraqi Kurdistan Democratic (IKDP) Party as the new prime minister of the government.

At the meeting of the 111 seat parliament in Erbil, Omer Fettah, from Iraqi President Jelal Talabani's Iraqi Kurdistan Patriotic (IKYB) Union, was appointed as deputy prime minister. The meeting of the Erbil parliament also decided on 27 different ministeries for the region, with 11 going to the IKDP, 11 going to the IKYB, and 5 going to different political groups from the region. In this way, the northern Iraqi Kurds are seen as having made a definitive move towards centralizing power in the region.
