ISTANBUL - Sivasspor coach Bülent Uygun declared the secret of his side's success, saying that there was no nightlife for the Central Anatolian team.
Leader Sivasspor hopes to win the Turkcell Super League title, which has not been won by a team outside of Istanbul in the last 24 years. For Uygun, the lack of an attractive nightlife is key.
"In Istanbul, there is Laila," said Uygun in a conference, referring to Istanbul’s once-popular nightclub. "In Sivas, we have ’La ilahe illallah,’" a phrase in the Quran that means, "There is only one God."
"There is no nightlife in Sivas," he said. "There are a couple of buffets where players can buy alcohol, and I am in contact with them. When one of my players buys alcohol, I am immediately informed."
Uygun added that in case Sivasspor makes it to the Champions League, it can match the giants of European football. "Sivasspor’s budget is $12 million, while Manchester United or Real Madrid’s budgets are $1 billion," said Uygun. "But one Turk equals the world. We believe that we can match them."
