ISTANBUL - The demand for cozy coffee shops and international espresso chains in Istanbul’s Nişantaşı is exceptionally high. The addition of the UK based coffee chain, Costa Coffee, has been highly anticipated and finally welcomed in the neighborhood. The cappuccinos made with fresh milk every day make a fine impression
Costa Coffee has opened its second branch in Istanbul’s Nişantaşı neighborhood on Teşvikiye Street. Costa’s first stylish Turkish branch was established recently in Istanbul's Palladium Shopping Mall.
Costa is a prominent coffee house company based in the United Kingdom, founded in 1971 by Italian brothers Sergio & Bruno Costa. With the success of their specialties in Italian coffee styles, the company was acquired by the Whitbread Company and now has more than 1,200 branches worldwide.
One of the most significant differences of Costa Coffee is the milk in their coffee drinks. In fact, Costa Coffee uses fresh milk every day with no preservatives, UHT or processing.
Mixed with Costa’s rich coffee blend, one does not get the intense and buttery smell (or taste!) of usual packaged milk; therefore adding to the aroma and authenticity of a fresh coffee roast.
In the cappuccino, for example, the difference of fresh milk is clearly evident; a thick lather of cloudy milk foam forms on top of the coffee due to the freshness and lack of preservatives. One can almost cut and eat this foam like a warm fizzy cake! Obviously fresh milk (Costa uses Sek Milk in Turkey) is also much more beneficial for health than processed and UHT milks full of preservatives.
Costa’s coffee beans are particular and distinguishing as well. "We have our own unique roast that enables us to blend six parts arabica beans and one part robusta beans," said Kılıç Arslantürk, Costa’s chief operating officer.
Soya milk is also available for those who are lactose intolerant. Also, Costa’s hot chocolate is made with real Belgium chocolate, and is thick, smooth and dreamy. Costa also produces snacks and complimentary tastes that to go with their coffee. Muffins, cakes, puffy pastries and paninis are available with the customized standards of Costa in every global store. Their toasted panini sandwich is one a rare experiences in Turkey in that it strives to stay true to its Italian origins. Offered with pepperoni, mozzarella, tuna or chicken, a toasted panini makes a satisfying lunch.
Muffins and snacks
The muffins in Costa’s window are displayed, not in a regular paper muffin cup, but in a posh dark muffin wrap. The double chocolate and the Black Forest with white icing and raspberry muffins call for teeth to sink in.
Other sweet snacks include chewy and moist brownies, bittersweet chocolate Tiffin Bars, biscuits with a firmer consistency than the old-fashion Mozik Cake and Torrone Bars featuring an original and unique combination of marshmallows, dried fruits and biscuits. For a fruitier variety, apple crumble is light and juicy with a delicate caramel sauce.
One of the most eye-catching aspects of Costa in Nişantaşı is the interior design. While the outside area is for smokers (and great people watching), the inside has a smart, clean and posh feel. With a striking, yet small, and well-groomed garden in the back and cozy, airy seating downstairs, Costa not only offers delicious coffees and snacks, but also makes for a pleasing place to stop and rest.
