Newborn dies, 10 others sick in Bursa

ISTANBUL - A newborn has died after being discharged from a hospital in the western city of Bursa, while 10 other infants were taken back to the medical facility after their conditions worsened.
All 11 infants were born after July 1 in the public hospital of Bursa’s İnegöl district and all had difficulty breathing after they were discharged, the Doğan news agency reported Sunday. The hospital’s maternity ward was closed temporarily by the local health administration and the surviving infants were sent to the public hospital in Dörtçelik. The body of the deceased child will undergo an autopsy.
According to Ümit Murat, 23, the father of the dead infant, the day after the baby was released from the hospital, it had difficulty breathing. "We took our baby to a clinic and they sent us to the İnegöl hospital," Murat told the Anatolia news agency. "It was our first baby and it died on the way to the hospital."
An official who asked to remain anonymous said the hospital is looking into every possible reason for the newborn’s death. "We are considering all [types of] negligence and the case is being investigated in all aspects," the official said. "There may be an infection in the maternity ward. We are also examining the vaccines given to children. But it is a low possibility that the vaccines were contaminated."
The local health administration said the 10 surviving infants were in good condition at this time.
27 deaths in two weeks
In July of last year, 27 newborns died in a period of two weeks, mostly from infection, at Zekai Tahir Burak Hospital in Ankara. In September, 13 premature infants died in the intensive-care unit of Tepecik Hospital in İzmir. Inspectors later said that the cause of the İzmir deaths was an infection spread by intravenous fluids.
Government-appointed doctors investigating the Ankara deaths said a staff shortage had increased the risk of infection at the hospital there.
