The Turkish Ministry of Justice has finalized work on a new Witness Protection Program designed for critical cases in the ongoing struggle against terror and organized crime in Turkey. At some point over the coming days, it is expected the new Witness Protection Bill will be presented to the government. Some of the highlights of the new program are as follows:
Witnesses who come forward to identify suspects in cases where the prosecution is asking for anywhere between 10 years and a life sentence will be allowed into the new Witness Protection Program. Protection will also be extended to spouses, fiancees, and close friends of central witnesses. Plastic surgery will also be covered under the Witness Protection Program, as will the assignment of completely new identity cards and all official documents. Help will also be offered to witnesses under the auspices of this program in finding new work and moving, whether inside or outside of the country.
