ISTANBUL - Local designers are benefiting from the popularity of a television serial staring Turkish actor Kıvanç Tatlıtuğ in the Middle East, as they can barely keep up with demand for the clothes he wears on screen.

T-shirts designed by Sedef Çalarken, best known for her "Osm@n" brand of combining Ottoman style with modern fashions, are among the most popular items. Çalarken’s t-shirts went on sale in 2006, portraying Ottoman Sultans with iPods, Bluetooth devices and laptops have attracted attention before. Çalarken also has other brands named "H@rem" and "Genç Osm@n"for which Tatlıtuğ opened doors of the Middle East.

Çalarken said she was very impressed with Tatlıtuğ’s performances on the television serials he played in and she had difficulties in reaching him at first. "I have sent my t-shirts through the production crew to Tatlıtuğ and waited for him to wear them in excitement. He did not wear them for a month but then he did not take off my t-shirt with Selim III listening to an iPod for six episodes in a row. Later, I heard he constantly wore them in daily life, too." Çalarken said she also saw Tatlıtuğ wearing her t-shirts on other television shows the actor was a guest on and it was very exciting to see her designs on someone she considers so successful in his profession.

The Middle Eastern fans of Tatlıtuğ rushed orders to Çalarken after watching the episodes he wore them in. "Kıvanç Tatlıtuğ is the best thing that’s happened to me in my design career; he saved me from bankruptcy" Çalarken said, describing the Middle Eastern interest in her designs after Tatlıtuğ started wearing them: "All the Arab tourists that come to my store are fans, I receive e-mail orders from them after they return to their countries."

Çalarken finds the style of Turkish women too ordinary: "The woman in the village, the women in Islamic modest dressing or dark chadors are Turkish women, too. I believe it is too early to talk about Turkish women’s taste in fashion."
