Rasmussen, who resigned as Denmark’s prime minister Sunday after he was chosen as the next head of the transatlantic alliance, fell down the stairs in the middle of the night and dislocated his shoulder, news agency Ritzau said.Â

He was rushed by ambulance to Taksim Emergency Hospital, where doctors put his shoulder back in place. He returned to his hotel several hours later, the agency said.

Rasmussen’s spokesman was not available for comment.

The Dane, who will succeed Jaap de Hoop Scheffer of the Netherlands, who steps down at the end of July, was in Istanbul to take part in the second summit of the Alliance of Civilizations, an intercultural forum, on Monday.

Rasmussen’s appointment came after Turkey dropped its opposition to his nomination at the 60th anniversary NATO summit in Strasbourg on Saturday following last-minute wrangling.
