ANKARA - A new government regulation that provides for the establishment of a special police unit to coordinate the fight against terrorism was published in the Official Gazette yesterday.

The Special Security Department unit will be under the authority of the Police Department and will be composed of five subdivisions, the regulation said. The decision to create this new unit was made upon the request of the Interior Ministry on Dec. 29, 2008. Â

The Anatolia news agency said administrative work was still underway and it was not yet decided who would preside over the new unit. It was earlier reported that the unit would recruit officials from the Chief of General Staff, National Intelligence Organization, or MÄ°T, and other relevant institutions. The unit will collect and analyze intelligence and share it among these institutions.

The proposal to form a coordinated unit has been on the country’s agenda due to the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party, or PKK's, deadly attacks against the military and civilians in recent years. The military said it had been left alone in the fight against the PKK and proposed a new mechanism to share the burden.

The Interior Ministry being put in charge of the unit has triggered remarks that civilian views will also be taken into account in the fight against terrorism.
