Nepal's prime minister fires army chief

KATMANDU - Nepal's prime minister fired the army chief yesterday, accusing him of defying government orders, officials said.
The move - rejected by the main opposition party, which warned of street protests - threatened to worsen relations between the military and the coalition government led by former Maoist rebels. Information Minister Krishna Bahadur Mahara said the prime minister announced army chief Rookmangud Katawal's removal after calling a special Cabinet meeting yesterday.
