ANKARA - Three Turkish national dancers have created a new piece called "Salsa Torero," that will inspire an interest in dance sports among audiences and is set to hit stages on Feb. 6.
One of the group members, Alize Sekman, said performances would start with a show in a special location in Çayyolu.
Sekman said the project began five months ago in the Mediterranean city of Antalya with a proposal by artist Levent Dörtel. She said the Torero, or matador, in the performance would be played by Volkan Akkaya. Sekmen and Binnur Şimşek will act as bulls.
Sekman said there were many other projects similar to "Salsa Torero" being performed across the world. "What can a dancer do on his or her own? He or she can take a part in a music video but dancers are always behind the main artist. We have decided to change this. We dream of something in which as a team we can be a part of the main concept. So we formed Salsa Torero," she said.
Sekman said they wanted to create a project similar to those seen abroad. "When you go to a bar overseas and see a dance show, you watch it and forget it but you remember the dancers. But this is not we want. We want to be a brand," she said.
Making people curious
Speaking about the problems they had during rehearsals, Sekman said it was very difficult for three people to move at the same time in a very narrow space. Sekman said the goal of the project was to make people curious about dance sports. She said, "The most important goal is to make people ask questions. The first question is for them to ask what dance we are performing, the other is for them to ask who we are. I think people will ask these questions if we can create a good piece." Sekman said they would promote the long-project in an international festival and they trained students for the continuation of the project.
