Writer and researcher Murat Bardakci had the following to say about the controversy in the Ankara municipality surrounding alleged comments by Abdullah Cevdet: "The alleged comment by Abdullah Cevdet about how 'We need to bring in studs from the West to save these people,' was in fact this: 'Along with syphilis, there are many diseases ruining the physical state of the Turkish people. In order to beautify it, we should bring men in from Hungary.'"Bardakci went on to explain, "I searched my archives and records following the controversy in the Ankara municipality. But I had to go to Professor Ilber Ortay to get information, since my documents were not in order." "Professor Ortay said that Cevdet's comments were not made in an attempt to put down the Turkish people, but in order to propose a way to "straighten out a people whose appearance was affected by disease." Ortay also reminded me that if people were concerned, they should read author Samet Agaoglu's book, "My Father's Friends." In it, Agaoglu's gives all the details connected to the argument..." Â Â
