ERZURUM - A mother of seven in the village of Karaşeyh, in the eastern province of Erzurum, has been forced to take her youngest children into prison with her after she was sentenced to 20 months for illegally electricity.

The 32-year-old woman, whose husband died from lung cancer last year, had to take her two youngest children to jail with her because she had no one to look after them. Her five older children will be helped by the local administrator of the district of Çat, Hasan Balcı.

Balcı said the five children, between the ages of eight and 17, would be taken care of by the state and they would be given a monthly stipend of YTL 130.

According to reports, during a routine inspection last year, electricity distribution officials found the woman was using electricity illegally.

A complaint was filed against her and after trial that ended early this year, she was sentenced to 20 months in jail. The woman began her sentence Dec. 18, taking her two children, aged four and five, with her.

Balcı said the woman was illiterate and did not know what was happening until it was too late. He also said she had ignored advice that she should appeal her conviction.

"Her relatives did not help her with the process and the sentence was eventually confirmed. We will look after the children until the mother is released," he said.
