BURSA - Than the more than 60,000 traffic accidents in Turkey in the first three months of 2009 have caused 555 deaths and 30,075 injuries, according to the data from General Police Directorate’s Traffic Services.
Among the 62,685 traffic accidents, 444 resulted in deaths, 17,102 in injuries and 45,139 caused just structural damage.
Just over 50,000 accidents occurred in urban centers. Vehicle damage was worth more than 183 million Turkish liras.
Cars involved most in crashes
The majority of accidents that resulted in injury or death involved cars (14,639). After which came vans (4,563) followed by motorcycles (2,622). While 1,117 buses were involved in traffic accidents, so too were 59 ambulances.
During the first three months of 2009, 13,242 traffic accidents occurred in Istanbul killing 54 people and injuring almost 4000. In Ankara, 8,694 crashes resulted in 38 and 2,615 injuries. Meanwhile in İzmir, 18 people died in slightly more than 5000 accidents, with a further 1,700 injured.
Fewest number of crashes
On the other hand, the eastern provinces Ardahan and Tunceli saw the fewest number of accidents. Seven people were injured in Ardahan in 29 separate accidents, while 10 injured in Tunceli in 36 crashes. There have been no deaths in either city.
Other provinces that have also so far kept their death tolls at zero this year include Çanakkale, Hakkari, Kars, Kırşehir, Muş, Rize, Siirt, Sinop, Bayburt, Batman, Bartın and Iğdır.
