Following reports from residents of Buyukcekmece's Kirac neighborhood about a sharp smell and acid leaking from the ground, authorities dug a hole only to find 8 barrels of an as yet unidentified substance buried underground. With reverberations still continuing from last month's discovery of barrels containing a cancer-causing agent in Tuzla, the discovery yesterday of the leaking barrels in Buyukcekmece has raised new alarms.

Following complaints from local residents, Mayor Hamit Oncu sent bulldozers and health teams to the site where the leaking and smell had been reported.

Said Mayor Oncu: "A citizen who was collecting metal parts had seen these barrels 2 months ago, and had wanted to collect them at that time. He returned with other metal collectors and a truck to load them onto, but the citizens in the area warned them that the barrels contained poisonous substances, and they decided not to take them. There was more earth thrown on top of these barrels during road work done in the area. The leakage coming from the barrels has been enough to eat away at the wild grass growing here. We want these barrels taken away immediately."
