ISTANBUL - The monument of the bust of Turkish Republic founder Atatürk and his address to Turkish youth, which was erected Oct. 29, the Republic Day of Turkey, has been removed form Taksim Square.

Carrying a 35-meter flagpole, the monument, designed by Ferit Turan, was claimed to be illicit.

The decision was taken by Istanbul’s Preservation Council for Habitat and Cultural Property and the monument removed by Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality because the monument was not expected to have Atatürk’s bust and his address to Turkish youth on it.

Turan, the sculptor, claiming that the municipality allowed him to design the monument the way it was placed at the square, said, "There is only one difference with the model and the finished version, and that is Atatürk’s bust was placed on top of his address to Turkish youth."

After the incident, Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Kadir Topbaş said, "An officious personality designed a monument by placing Atatürk’s address to Turkish youth on it and took the monument in a different direction," adding that the municipality will take its case to the Architectural Committee. The Turkish flag is still there.
