ISTANBUL - A new "money counter" tool for the blind has been distributed to help people with poor vision have an easier time using the new money that entered circulation Jan. 1, according to the Central Bank.

The bottom part of the money counter enables the blind to distinguish the value of coins based on their size. The upper part of the counter acts as a legend and translates the raised marks on paper bills into Braille to convey the value of the bill.

The Blind Federation of Turkey and Partially-sighted Federation of Turkey sent the money counters to primary schools, rehabilitation centers and all Central Bank branches.

The federations will distribute the counters to members. Non-members will be able to acquire the money counter from Central Bank branches.

The Central Bank can send the money counters to those who contact either the bank or the Bersay Communication Consultancy, which runs the money counter promotional campaign.

Holographic foil bands and raised marks are reinforced on the new bills. Although helpful, it is not necessary for the blind to use the money counter because the Braille alphabet is also used on the paper money. Each bill is marked one through six on the upper left hand corner of the bill . One corresponds to a 5 lira bill, two corresponds to a 10 lira bill and so on. The money counter uses the one through six marking system and corresponds to the actual money value. The money counter would translate the one Braille mark on a 5 lira bill to read "5 lira bill" on the counter.

The bills are also differentiated by their sizes, which are directly proportional to their values. The length of the 5 lira bill is 130 millimeters with 6-millimeter incremental increases for each bill. The 5 and 10 lira bills are 64 millimeters wide, the 20 and 50 lira bills are 68 millimeters wide and the 100 and 200 lira bills are 72 millimeters wide. These features along with the Braille markings and raised lettering will make identification of monetary value easier for the blind.
