ANKARA - A groundbreaking ceremony for Ankara’s new mosque was held by the Department of Religious Affairs.
The head of the Directorate, Ali Bardakoğlu, and ministers of the department all participated in the ceremony Wednesday.
State Minister Yazıcıoğlu said it was impossible for trends in civil architecture not to affect the architecture of mosques. There have been new movements in civil architecture and new aesthetics have been created and this has been reflected in contemporary mosque architecture.
"The mosque at the entry to Ankara will be a pleasant place to worship." said Yazıcıoğlu, who added the new mosque will include both modern and classic lines. Bardakoğlu said mosques were places of peace and emphasized the importance of presenting religious services in mosques that embrace the whole community.
Emphasizing the importance of aesthetics in mosque architecture, Bardakoğlu added, "We should give works to society that are appropriate to the landscape of rare and precious masterpieces we inherited from our ancestry. We want to leave beautiful architectural works, that we are proud of, for future generations, not works that embarrass us."
