ISTANBUL - Migrants rioted at a detention center in Istanbul Friday in a protest against alleged police abuse and poor conditions. An Associated Press photographer saw detainees dangling burning blankets from windows of the barricaded center.
Detainees shouted slogans accusing police of abuse and held up banners complaining of hunger. One banner read: "Prime Minister, U.N. help us please."
The riot Friday was the second at the Kumkapi detention center in two months. Authorities were not immediately available for comment.
Turkey is a transit point for migrants trying to enter the European Union. Some of those held at Kumkapi have been deported from Greece. The New York-based Human Rights Watch last month accused Turkey of detaining asylum seekers indefinitely in inhumane conditions.
