MANİSA - One of the oldest of its kind in Turkey, the 469th Mesir Festival started yesterday in Manisa.

The festival aims to promote Manisa’s famous mesir paste, which is believed to be a cure-all medicine made of a blend of 41 spices.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Ufuk Tanık, the head of the Manisa and Mesir Promotion Community, said he was happy to witness the opening of the festival for the 50th year. "I am happy that our association has been a part of this festival for 50 years," he said, adding that mesir is not only a tradition, but also a symbol for peace. "I want this week to pass with joy, fraternity and love."

Typically held in March, the Mesir Festival was postponed until April because of March 29 local elections.

The chairman of the Mesir Committee, Govenor Cellalettin Güvenç, said they aimed to have a magnificent festival this year.

The festival is not limited to tasting the famed mesir; it also stages some cultural activities, such as the International Cartoon Competition.

Bulgarian artist Kostov Dragostinov won the competition, whose theme was "Our future, our children," to claim the 2,500-euro prize, while Serbian Jaksa Vlahovic was the runner-up. Turkish student Ekin Özkesici won in the national young artists category.
