KOCAELİ - Kocaeli hosted a ceremony for the memorial house of Prince Imre Thököly, an important figure in Hungarian history who sought asylum in the Ottoman Empire after losing a war.

He died in İzmit approximately 300 years ago.

Ertuğrul Günay, Turkish minister of culture and tourism, and Dr. Istv?n Hiller, Hungarian minister of culture and education, attended the opening of the "Imre Thököly Memorial House," which was built by the Kocaeli Metropolitan Municipality at Saka Park.

Günay said they have signed protocols with the guest minister about culture and education exchange programs. "Turkey had been harboring heroes of the Hungarian people’s struggle for freedom and independence for hundreds of years: R?k?czi in Tekirdağ, Kossuth in Kütahya and Imre Thököly in Kocaeli. Your ancestors have been our guests for hundreds of years and be sure of that they are our heroes, too," Günay said. Günay said as long as The Republic of Turkey lives, these heroes shall continue to live in Turkish lands. "Just like Gül Baba lives in your arms in Hungary on that beautiful hill among the world famous beauty of Budapest," he said.

"Your ancestors have committed an act most precious for us and harbored our hero, Imre Thököly; offered him land and a home," Hiller said. "Even after 300 years, Hungarian students and the whole generation is aware of Thököly’s welcome in Anatolia with open arms, where he lived the last years of his life and died." Hiller also said they see the memorial house as an important step for the future.
