The former Kayserispor player, whose move from the central Anatolian club caused a stir between Fenerbahçe and Beşiktaş, signed a contract Saturday and met supporters during a special ceremony.
Fans welcomed the new signing, but at a price. "First kiss the jersey, then apologize, then these supporters will cherish you," were the lyrics of a song chanted by the fans. Topuz obeyed, kissed his jersey and waved at the crowd. The ceremony was the last episode of a transfer saga, which started in early June.
Beşiktaş was the first team to agree on terms with Topuz, who later posed for the media with a Beşiktaş jersey. But Topuz still had one year left in his contract with Kayseri, so legally, the route that Fenerbahçe followed was just, according to FIFA Regulations on the Status and Transfer of Players. The world football’s governing body rules state that players under contract are not allowed to make transfer talks without the club’s consent.
That was the route Fenerbahçe took: The club agreed with Kayserispor first, forcing Topuz, who announced that he was "born a Beşiktaş fan and would not play for Fenerbahçe if paid 50 million liras," to settle terms and put pen to contract. The player was wearing a suit and then changed to a Fenerbahçe jersey. To match the jersey was a cap that read "One day, everybody will be a Fenerbahçe fan," given to Topuz by a fan group.
’Forget the past, now it is all Fenerbahçe’
Fenerbahçe Chairman Aziz Yıldırım was proudly enjoying his latest triumph as Topuz answered questions from reporters.
"What has happened is in the past now," he said. "I have gone through the hardest three weeks of my life. What I need most now is the trust of Fenerbahçe supporters and a holiday."
The midfielder added he wanted to be a part of the Istanbul club for many years to come. "Everybody will witness that I will make a great contribution in Fenerbahçe’s title," he said. "I love you all, and I thank you all," he said.
