Turkey has submitted a medium-term economic plan to the International Monetary Fund but there is no timeline for approval of an IMF program, Economy Minister Mehmet Şimşek said at the Brookings Institution in Washington on Monday.
"We recently submitted our program, but it takes two to tango. I cannot give you a definitive time in terms of when things can be wrapped up and when and if we can invite [an IMF mission] to Ankara," Reuters cited Şimşek as saying.
"I am not in a position to give a timeline, simply because I can only control what we can and cannot do," Şimşek said, according to Bloomberg. The minister declined to comment on the possible size of the loan package, saying Turkey is "not there yet."
If and when the global economy rebounds, Turkey will recover "strongly and quickly," Şimsek said. The country’s banking system is in "very good shape" and "could be supportive of growth."
