ANKARA - Seeking to topple the bastion of the CHP in Ankara, the AKP’s Bülent Akarcalı says he will implement a plethora of projects if elected and will pay particular attention to environmental issues. He also says the city’s AKP-run metropolitan municipality and Çankaya Municipality will cooperate a lot better if he emerges as the election winner
The ruling party mayoral candidate for Ankara’s Çankaya district has promised to complete 25 projects by 2011 if elected.
Bülent Akarcalı, a center-right politician who will run from the ranks of the ruling Justice and Development Party, or AKP, in the March elections, promoted his mayoral projects in a press conference yesterday. The meeting was attended by the top cadre of the AKP including Foreign Minister Ali Babacan, government spokesman Cemil Çiçek and Ankara Mayor Melih Gökçek.Â
"Ankara’s Çankaya needed a new spirit and identity. Çankaya can’t be ruled well. I have thus come up with 25 projects set by the end of 2011," said Akarcalı.
Environment
Akarcalı said they would create an environmentally improved Çankaya with enough parking lots, walking lanes, accessible social facilities, living spaces, pavements that are free from cars, day-care and health centers. He also plans to create a traffic-free pedestrian zone in the city center of Kızılay as well as in Çankaya’s other areas.
Establishing 10 underground 300 or 500-capacity parking lots and a huge techno park, and increasing the number of market places from 18 to 20 remain among his other projects. These market places will also be utilized for some social activities such as concerts, and open-air cinema and exhibits.
Meanwhile, Gökçek said the social democrat opposition party-run Çankaya Municipality in Ankara has always been in conflict with the Ankara Metropolitan Municipality but the both would work harmoniously if Akarcalı was elected.
Gökçek said they would continue to carry out the urban transformation projects as well as the construction of new crossroads in Ankara if he is re-elected Ankara Mayor. They planned to establish three new universities, the construction of which is scheduled to start within five years. They would also make a tunnel road all along the Ankara’s Hoşdere Street as well as new underpasses at the crossroads of Atakule and Yıldız. He also said they would complete the subway line between Kızılay and Çayyolu.
