ANKARA - President Abdullah Gül said requests from workers’ unions to stage May 1 demonstrations in Istanbul’s Taksim Square should be considered, reported the chairman of the Confederation of Revolutionary Workers' Unions, or DİSK, Süleyman Çelebi, who visited the president yesterday.
"He evaluated our demands objectively," said Çelebi. Confederation of Public Sector Unions, KESK, Turkish Doctors’ Association, or TTB, and Turkish Union of Engineers' and Architects' Chambers, or TMMOB, President Mehmet Soğancı and Çelebi held a one hour meeting with Gül yesterday to discuss the possibility of a permit to celebrate Labor Day in Taksim.
Taksim is associated with Labor Day since the deaths of 36 people in the square on May 1, 1977, after unknown gunmen opened fire on the crowd from buildings nearby. Taksim Square is often the scene of violent clashes with police and May 1 demonstrators. Labor Day was declared an official holiday in Turkey last week.
