ISTANBUL - Despite the economic crisis and many financial hardships, the Ankara Jazz Festival will celebrate its 12th year this week with the theme of "Jazz & Bass."
The festival will continue its tradition of hosting a rich lineup of jazz musicians and orchestras from both Turkey and abroad, featuring a rich and colorful program scheduled for Nov. 24 to Dec. 4.
Organized jointly by the LEO Organization and the Ankara Jazz Association, the festival will feature many outstanding performances including world-renowned bass artists the Renaud Garcia-Fons Trio and Matthew Garrison, as well as invaluable Turkish jazz musicians Selçuk Sun, Kamil Erdem and Gürol Ağırbaş.
The festival will also pay tribute to late veteran Turkish jazz musician Kudret Öztoprak. Sun’s concert, which will take place Nov. 26 at Middle East Technical University, or METU's, Kemal Kurdaş Hall at 8 p.m., will be dedicated to Öztoprak.
World famous Turkish pianist and composer Fahir Atakoğlu will also be a guest at the festival. Atakoğlu will perform a concert together with the Cuban Horacio Hernandez, considered to be the most talented drummer in the world today, and the U.S. bassist Matthew Garrison on Nov. 27 at METU’s Kemal Kurdaş Hall at 8 p.m. He will promote his latest album "Istanbul in Blue" at the concert.
Prolific Turkish jazz pianist-composer Kerem Görsev and his trio will also be on stage Dec. 2 with the famous U.S. jazz musician Allan Harris at 8 p.m. at the same venue. The festival will conclude with a concert by the Turkish Harmony Stars Orchestra, or TÜRKAY, of the Turkish Armed Forces.
