The 28th International Istanbul
Film Festival continues to bring world-renowned names from the cinema sector. This week: American actor, producer and director John Malkovich.
Best known for lending his name and persona to the film "Being John Malkovich," Malkovich will meet the audience at a special ceremony before the screening of Icelandic film "White Night Wedding" at 1:30 p.m. tomorrow in Emek Movie Theater.
During the ceremony he will be presented with the 2009 Cinema Honorary Award of the International Istanbul Film Festival. Malkovich will also attend a news conference tomorrow morning and respond to questions from members of the press.
Director Steve Jacobs’s film "Disgrace," which was adapted from Nobel-prize winner J.M. Coetzee's 1999 novel and stars Malkovich, is among the films to compete for the Golden Tulip in the film festival.
The film, the winner of the FIPRESCI Award at the Toronto Film Festival last year, is the story of a South African university professor (Malkovich) who loses everything Ğ his reputation, his job, his peace of mind, dreams and even his daughter's well-being and safety. "Disgrace" will be screened during the second week of the festival.
Born in 1953 in the United States, Malkovich is a two-time Academy Award-nominated and Emmy-winning actor, producer and director. He began appearing in movies in 1984 and was nominated for an Oscar in the same year for a supporting role in "Places in the Heart." Over the past 25 years, he has appeared in more than 70 films. He received another Oscar nomination for his performance as an assassin in the Clint Eastwood thriller "In the Line of Fire" in 1993.
His other well-known films include "Dangerous Liaisons," "Con Air," "The Man in the Iron Mask," "Rounders," "Changeling" and "Burn After Reading."
Director’s visits
Malkovich met with the Istanbul International Film Festival audiences last in 2002 as the director of "Dancers Upstairs." The festival is organized by the Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts, or IKSV, with the sponsorship of Akbank.
Another guest of the festival will be the wonder child of French cinema, François Ozon. Director and screenwriter Ozon comes to Istanbul to attend the screening of his latest film "Ricky" at 9:30 p.m. Saturday. He will meet the audience before the screening and respond to their questions.
"Ricky" is Ozon’s first feature following the 2007 feminist melodrama "Angel." The film, adapted from British writer Rose Tremain's short story "Moth," features the story of Katie and Paco, who fall in love with each other. Out of their love comes an extraordinary baby, a very special baby: Ricky. The film fuses genres, which Ozon says include thriller, horror, sci-fi, comedy and fairy tale elements.
Ozon, who is known to Turkish movie buffs for his films "8 Femmes," "Swimming Pool" and "Under the Sand," is considered to be one of the most important young French film directors in the new "new wave" in French cinema.
